Artists Statements:

Nature and man's place in the world is a central theme of the paintings of Jerome Flagg. In an age where the urban lifestyle increasingly drowns out the human voice, the artists believes that an essential component of our humanity is our connection with the world. Finding that connection through imagery; the power of myth and  archetypal themes, is the foundation of his vision. 

Working primarily in acrylics, the artists uses assorted techniques to achieve his goal. Where appropriate, collage elements, ink, gouache and acrylics are combined in varying combinations to achieve the desired effect. The luminous quality evident in many the paintings is accomplished through the  application of multiple layers of transparent paint applied to the surface. Working primarily on masonite and Japanese Kinwashi paper, a single painting may require up to thirty layers of paint.

The artist has had numerous private showings and gallery exhibitions in the Chicago area. An African American artist, he is the founder and owner of Shongia Import Gallery.
